Talking about poverty in New Brunswick

At our last meeting January 18th, 2016 we had three speeches delivered.  One was an Ice Breaker, a 4-6 minute speech, where the speaker introduces himself or herself to the group.  A pretty easy speech but most people are nervous to deliver it.   Another advanced speech of 8-10 minutes was on helping a non-technical
audience understand Enterprise Resource Planning systems.  A third speech (10-12 minutes) was on story telling, and in this case reading a story.  We heard a folk story from India.

The impromptu speaking session, Table Topics, where all participate was on poverty in New Brunswick. The theme was inspired by news in the Telegraph-Journal in early January Topics about a woman 40 km outside Moncton living without heat, water or electricity.  She went to the newspaper with a request for help finding wood to burn.   The community responded with wood, a new wood stove, cash, food, and home repairs.  So our discussion was on poverty. Some of our members volunteer and see the effects of poverty often, others give money and time. It was interesting to have perspective from our members who migrated to Canada.  Among current members one member is from Libya and some from India.

Sometimes Table Topics are serious, sometimes very light. It's important to offer a variety to stretch people's skills.

Three more speeches scheduled for Monday, 6pm-8pm at St Macs High off Sydney Street,
lower level room 002.

February 1st we have an Open House with a pretty typical agenda but with more explanation of what we do and why, and how the participants benefit. And we'll have some snacks. Early registrations are solid.  We hope to have a good crowd to observe and get more awareness and knowledge of Saint John Toastmasters.
