Saint John Toastmasters Monday October 6 2014 This weeks meeting featured three speeches. Two were Icebreakers, the first speeches delivered by new members where he or she introduces himself or herself to the club in four to six minutes. One of these speakers was born in southern India, and one in Ukraine. One speech focused on use of props and that was on the topic of how the brain processes electrical impulses to manage bodily functions. All received feedback on what they did well and suggestions for improvement. The impromptu session was broadly on the theme of harvesting; opportunities, deer, various autumn activities etc. This always provides a simple opportunity to address the group on a topic you haven't rehearsed. Two additional guests attended both of whom showed interest in joining. We have six new members since the first of September. And room for more. Toastmasters is self-paced so people can join at any point during th...

Gardner's Multiple Intelligences and Skills of Professionalism Saint John Toastmasters Monday April 14 2014 Two speeches this week; one on Gardner's model of Multiple Intelligences and one on three skills of professionalism developed in Toastmasters (inspiring action, dealing with conflict and mentorship). The skill exercised in the first speech was choosing and using organizational techniques, and in the second speech on choosing, defining and making clear the general and specific purpose of the speech. Impromptu speaking practice was about 'flow' and how it relates to managing stress, rebounding from setbacks, occupations such as writing, managing interactions etc. We added a new member and had two guests who appear to be interested in joining the group. We have no meeting on Easter Monday as the school is closed. Otherwise, We meet each Monday from September through to mid-June in room 002 downstairs at St Macs with the exception of holidays. ht...

Good article from the Globe and Mail - this is why I joined Toastmasters many years ago I’m tongue-tied at work. How can I learn to speak more freely? http://www.theglobeandmail.com/report-on-business/careers/career-advice/experts/im-tongue-tied-at-work-how-can-i-learn-to-speak-more-freely/article17875074/?cmpid=rss1 or http://ow.ly/vCjRL

Volunteering at Romero House, the Unthinking Use of Labels, and the Sales Process ~ Saint John Toastmasters Monday March 24 2014 On Monday we had two new guests both of whom indicated they want to join the group. It is always a treat for us to see new people join the group and begin furthering their development in our environment. Our off the cuff speaking practice was based on personal interpretation of some funny charts from the internet, such as a plot showing the relationship between a persons age and the price of his or her preferred meal, and a bar chart of favorite pies, and a pie chart of favorite bars. We had three speeches on volunteering at Romero House and the need for compassion in general, on our blind use of personal labels in society, and on the effective selling process. We meet each Monday from September through to mid-June in room 002 downstairs at St Macs with the exception of holidays. Also if schools are closed for weather, o...

Saint John Toastmasters Monday February 24 2014 Tonight we had four guests, the biggest turn out of guests we've seen in 2014. We have been promoting an open house month although people can visit at any time, and new members can join at any point of the year. The program is self-paced so when someone joins isn't material. No semester systems in Toastmasters. We have a program year that runs weekly from September until mid-June but people can jump in at any point. Next week the school is closed so we will be at an alternate location on Monday March 3rd - check the website for details http://saintjohn.toastmastersclubs.org/directions.html Our speeches were on the topics of health mentorship (a project on inspired word choice and description), kundalini yoga (a project on organizational techniques), and on procrastination (a project on entertaining audiences). We meet each Monday now through to mid-June at St Macs with the exception of holidays. ...

Monday January 27, 2014 at Saint John Toastmasters we had table topics (impromptu speaking practice) on our expectations of our political leaders. Questions included 'if someone seeking election appeared on your door step asking for a vote, what would you say you expect from him or her,' 'do we expect politicians to display a higher moral standard,' and 'is being in a drunken stupor a good excuse for anything (sadly this is topical in late 2013 and early 2014)'. People managed their time and answers well. Quite a lot of passion. Table topics change from week to week and can be light topics or more meaty topics. We're not trying to stump members, just giving them opportunities to manage their butterflies and offer a good response and commentary for one to two minutes. We also had two speeches last night. One practicing organizational techniques was about a specific family reunion and family reunions in general. A second practic...

Saint John Toastmasters Monday January 6 2014 Tonight we had three speeches, two from experienced members, and one from a member who joined in December. Members can join at any point of the year as the program is self-paced. It is rewarding to see new members begin to develop their skills and confidence. The speeches were about selecting a topic for a speech, about a survey of video games, and one on a couple of leadership stories and lessons. We meet each Monday now through to mid-June at St Macs with the exception of holidays. Also if schools are closed for weather, our meeting is cancelled. http://saintjohn.toastmastersclubs.org/directions.html
